A Basic Understanding of Computer Sh... er Stuff

A computer is made up of these pieces:
Monitor; the box you are looking at right now. aka CRT, LCD, display
CPU; Central Processing Unit, this is the thinking, calculating part of the computer
RAM; Random Access Memory is the fast temporary storage that programs run in. When RAM looses power, information stored there is lost. aka primary storage.
Hard Drive; is the permanant storage of your computer but it is much slower than RAM. aka Hard Disk
CD-Rom; is a large, cheap, read only media CDR is write once. CDRW is writeable many times. All CD media is much slower than Hard Drive storage
Keyboard; 104 buttons, one for each letter. There is no button to blow the computer up.
Mouse; a precision pointing device.
